Topiary was popularized across the Roman Empire by Julius Caesar. Its popularity in the United States today is
attributed to Walt Disney. This lecture will explore topiary’s long history as a cultural phenomenon.

January 27 - 300 Million Years of Butterfly and Moth Evolution
Speaker: Akito Kawahara, Ph.D., FLMNH, Director, McGuire Center for Lepidoptera & Biodiversity

There are more than 160,000 species of butterflies and moths in the world. This talk will present research on how
lepidopterans evolved, focusing on unique traits, such as diurnal flight and ultrasonic hearing organs that led to their
diversification.
February 3 - Emily Hobhouse and “Methods of Barbarism”

Englishwoman Emily Hobhouse went to South Africa during the Boer War in 1899 and was shocked by the
internment of women and children in “concentration camps”. She succeeded in eliminating this policy. In 1916 she
went to Belgium to investigate claims of German atrocities and met with the German Foreign Minister to advance a
plan to end the war. In 1919 she defied the British blockade to bring food to starving Germans and co-founded Save
the Children.
February 10 - Kaleidoscope of Colors in Asian Art
Speaker: Dr. Tongyun Yin, Curator of Asian Art at the Harn Museum of Art

Dr. Yin will discuss Asian art from the Harn collection that is currently on display in a special exhibition. This
exhibition shows how four key colors--green, blue, red, and gold--reveal diverse artistic traditions across Asia from
the 12th century BCE to the present.
February 17 - Riding the 33rd Parallel: Landscape Portraits—Florida to California
Speaker: Dr. Carol McCusker, Curator of Photography at the Harn Museum of Art

Dr. McCusker will take us on a virtual road trip of landscape portraits from Florida to California via the Harn's pho-
tography collection. It includes forty-eight photographs taken from 1961 to the present. The photographs have di-
verse perspectives and rich diversity including awesome manmade structures, weather, and people in and around the
33rd Parallel.
